Mar. 7th, 2011 @ 05:15 pm Your attention, please, dear members
For those of you who don't know, "bookaddict42 "  is one of our moderators' new account for book-related blogging, which is henceforth separate from her personal account (if you know who it is, or can guess-- which I'm sure you can-- please do me a favor and keep it to yourself).

Now down to the heart of the matter:

Given how little attention this community has been getting lately, I have to ask-- how many of you are really interested in having it continue? Or should us mods just go back to posting our book-related news, questions, memes, and quizzes in our own journals, where most of you are probably used to finding them anyway?

I love the idea of this community, but I feel like none of us really have the time or energy to devote to making it stand on its own feet as a genuine forum where book-lovers come together to share thoughts, information, and fun relating to our shared passion. And if it doesn't do that, I feel there isn't much point having it at all.

What are your thoughts on this? Are there ways to improve this community that don't require a massive investment of time and energy on the parts of the moderators (unless you're willing to step up and become one of them), or should we just call it quits, at least for now?

I'm interested in it continuing - its a shame thats its not very active here, as when people do post they post really interesting things! Unfortunately I can't think of any way to keep it going without a lot of effort...unless you put it forward for the "spotlight" thing, that seems to get lots of members and activity for communities? I personally don't have the mods added as a friend on here so can't see their personal journals...but maybe I should add them if they post interesting book related things! :)

Yes, I would definitely recommend putting it up for the lj spotlight - it seems like that would be the best way to recruit more active members.

I do like having book-centered discussions in one place, but if it is a burden on the moderators to keep this up, well, you need to do what is best for you.

What to do?

(Link)
There are numerous reading communities. I'd personally like to see some differentiation. Either by genre Or level of participation. Over the years, I've drastically reduced my LJ usage because it seems that it's mostly high school kids or vampires or other paranormal books. Not that I don't respect the participants.I celebrate that anyone is reading. But I am interested in a much broader range. Years ago I decided the best way to avoid reading crappy books was to only read recommendations. Unfortunately that hasn't worked out to well. I'm not saying which direction to go. Since I have no idea who is reading this, I don't want to offend when I suggest "anything but YA". I'm only saying I think it would be nice to focus on some specialization I know from experience that the spot light will get you a lot of interest. For a few weeks. That's about it. I would be willing to volunteer to help.

I adore YA, but am with you on the "taken over by YA" thing.

Perhaps YA activity could be limited to one or two days of the week? Or is that too exclusive?

Man, I love the idea of this community, but I'm so terribly busy these days that I have no time to participate, let alone moderate.

Maybe a structured sort of posting schedule? I'm a member of a character development/RP comm, and they have a theme for each day of the week, and a question related to that theme every day. I don't know that it would have to be daily, but maybe a once a week "What are you reading Wednesday" or "Fantasy Friday" or "Sci-Fi Sunday"? And people could interact in comments? I don't know. I'm just throwing ideas out there for the cat to sniff at, as they say.

Also, yes, the spotlight. If we can get some good posts going before the spotlight hits, we would draw in members who might want to stay. That's the trick, though. We'd need to kind of kick start ourselves. If a comm gets spotlighted and looks interesting, and I go to look, and nothing is happening? I usually leave. Granted, my attention span for that sort of thing is way low, but still, it's a thing to be aware of.

Definitely worth trying for, though.

With the person who said there needs to be a way to differentiate the comm from the other book comms out there.

I am HORRID about posting (here and in general, but have really enjoyed this community. I agree on the LJ spotlight thing. As far as differentiating, may be worth mentioning that this is for discussion and memes, and we don't really have lists or reviews.
